Not a good day for the Singapore gay community

1. Stuart Koe, founder of Fridae, has been arrested for meth possession. Possible jail time of 13 years.

2. Tan Eng Hong, a 47 year-old man, has been charged under 377A for public sex.

Major downer this Hari Raya.

Participants of "I Hate YOG" Facebook Group Arrested by Police [UPDATE: Actually, there might have been just cause.]

The main target seems to have been Abdul Malek, who was charged with "inciting violence and public disorder" for a comment he left on Facebook.

Oh lord. I knew we'd try and learn from the Beijing Olympics, but I really didn't think the Singapore government would be so frickin' STUPID. This is going to lead to incredibly bad international press for the country.

I'm really hoping there's been some kind of misunderstanding, but it doesn't seem possible. At least some news sources (The New Paper!) are reporting on this. I'm really ashamed of our country now.

UPDATE: My friend tells me I should read the New Paper article, which outlines the specific threat that Malek made to a Cabinet Minister, which the police would have the right to at least check out. Phew. Less ashamed now. But I don't have a copy of TNP, so I can't make up my whole mind yet.

UPDATE TO UPDATE: Here's the story from Channel News Asia:

It seems that Malek said it was time to "burn" Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, i.e. make him suffer. The police can say they couldn't afford to assume this was a metaphor, considering that this happened. But it's still pretty ridiculous, and the overreaction will make Singapore look even worse in the press.

(Why do I feel obliged to blog about these things? I could say I hope negative international attention will teach the government not to be so stupid... but that really doesn't seem to work. I suppose my sense of duty to justice is stronger than my sense of loyalty to country. Or perhaps the country that I love is a utopian Singapore, one that has sane governance with regards to freedom of speech, rather than the panic-stricken government we've actually been blessed and cursed with.)

Singapore arrests British author Alan Shadrake for criminal defamation

Seems to be related to his banned book, "Once a Jolly Hangman", about Singapore's death penalty. Happened just today. He's 75 years old.

I'm really disgusted with the Singapore government right now. More details at the links below.

Why I've been silent.

I don't have a CAP mentee anymore. More will be explained in the days to follow.

Film director Yasmin Ahmad (1958-2009)

She passed away last night. See here. Yesterday there was already news that she'd collapsed during her press conference from a stroke.

I'd admired her work ever since I watched Sepet. Or maybe before that, when I was doing my internship at Young and Rubicam KL and I found out about her Petronas National Holiday ads. It's Malaysians like her, I thought, that put Singaporeans with all our superficial racial harmony agendas, to shame.

Unfortunately, the only time I met her was at a free screening of Muallaf, which was awkward because I didn't actually like the movie, since it pulled its punches. But of course it was daring enough to actually take on the issue of Islam, and what filmmakers in Singapore have dared to do that? (I know of one, but he was called up for questioning by the ISD and his film was confiscated and he was forbidden to even discuss what happened thereafter.)

She was scheduled to shoot her first film in Singapore next year. It would've been called "Go, Thaddeus!" She'd already proven her worth with two short films advertising the importance of family love.

She quite liked us, although we kept on mispronouncing the titles of her films. We never censored and marginalised her and called her a traitor to her race the way Malaysia did. Of course, if she'd been born in Singapore, she would've been outspoken about the ironies we have here, and we would've destroyed her in our own way just the same.

I'm glad at least that she lived to see the elections of 2008, with the breaking through of a post-racial Malaysian politics. If only I knew there were other film directors like her around.

Bugger. Now I feel homesick.

'Cos I wasn't able to be at the Pink Dot gathering, Singapore's first queer pride sorta parade:

Thank gods that TOC reports on these things. More photos here.

The merlion got struck by lightning this afternoon.

No kidding. See here.

(UPDATE: got video coverage orready!!!)

Sigh. Was going to blog today about the book launch for "Thoughts Are Free", the new anthology of poetry by Singapore political detainees. Launch was supposed to be at Geylang East Library, but we were kicked out at the last minute. Lightning is a powerful force.

Obligatory Oscars Post

I know I should be mad at Mediacorp for censoring both the best screenplay and best actor award speeches on their replay of the Oscars yesterday. (Both were won for "Milk" and involved pro-gay rights speeches, in case you're living in a different universe. Check out the people complaining in the comments section of Fridae.)

But I'm mostly entranced by how handsome 34 year-old openly gay "Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is.

Are all lapsed Mormon boys this hot? I thought they grew out of it after their missions.

Evil Foreign Talent!

It's not just Indonesian zillionaires and Myanmarese warlords, y'know! It's also Nigerian 419 scammers who can earn US$27 million by impersonating the nation of Ethiopia.

To carry out the elaborate scheme, prosecutors in New York said on Friday, the man, identified as Paul Gabriel Amos, 37, a Nigerian citizen who lived in Singapore, worked with others to create official-looking documents that instructed Citibank to wire the money in two dozen transactions to accounts that Mr. Amos and the others controlled around the world.

Actually I love the fact that we've become a more international city. Back to the old pirate days.

See here.

Watching the Obama Inauguration now

Am I the only one who's bugged by the fact that everyone's talking about how he's the first guy in world history to go from the slave-class to the elected head of the country?

Because India was way ahead of 'em. Elected an untouchable as their tenth President way back in 1997.

From Wikipedia:

Narayanan is regarded as an independent and assertive President who set several precedents and enlarged the scope of the highest constitutional office. He described himself as a "working President" who worked "within the four corners of the Constitution"; something midway between an "executive President" who has direct power and a "rubber-stamp President" who endorses government decisions without question or deliberation.[2] He used his discretionary powers as a President and deviated from convention and precedent in many situations, including - but not limited to — the appointment of the Prime Minister in a hung Parliament, in dismissing a state government and imposing President's rule there at the suggestion of the Union Cabinet, and during the Kargil conflict. He presided over the golden jubilee celebrations of Indian independence and in the country's general election of 1998 became the first Indian President to vote when in office, setting another new precedent.

12:40 am: Barack H. Obama. Heh.

12:49: Wah lau. That homophobic Pastor Rick Warren just won't shut up. He's going through the entire Paternoster now. Oh good; now he's stopped.

KNN! "He effectively becomes the pastor of the nation"???? (I'm watching BBC btw.)

12:50: Aretha!!! What's with that hat???? And what language are you singing in???? Tongues?

1:02: Oops. Oath gaffe, Mr President-Elec- oh man, you're President now. Is Bush's tongue-slippage infectious? UPDATE: turns out the Chief Justice made the slip-up instead.

1:07: "The time has come to set aside childish things." I like it. Is this going to be the catchphrase of your inauguration?

1:10: "remaking America".... hee hee. This sounds like a Singapore policy.

You know, I'm getting a little scared of this man. I'm not sure if I want another American century; let Asia have its turn.

1:16: "Know that your people will judge you by what you build, not what you destroy." Very clever. Non-violent and constructive.

1:24: Inauguration poet Elizabeth Alexander!!!!

1:28: Okayeee... weird spoken word intonation combined with stark language and platitudes. I guess I like it, but I come awful close to not.

1:29: My god. The benediction guy is ancient.

1:33: "When yella can be okay fella? When the red man can get ahead, man???" (Oh, I see. He's a former civil rights leader.)

1:41: The post-speech dissection process reminds me of my old practical criticism papers. I think we're finished here. G'nite everybody!

1:47: HAHAHAHAAHHAAHAHA Dick Cheney's in a wheelchair. Let the bugger stay there and get bedsores.

14:31 the next day: Holy smokes. The USA had a part Native American president????

From Wikipedia, once again:

Chester Alan Arthur was the son of Irish born preacher William Arthur and Vermont born Malvina Stone Arthur. Malvina's grandfather, Uriah Stone, fought for the Continental Army during the American Revolution and named his son, Malvina's father, George Washington Stone. Malvina's mother was part Native American.[1]

...
During the 1880 U.S presidential election a New York attorney, Arthur P. Hinman, was hired to explore rumors of Arthur's foreign birth. Hinman alleged that Arthur was born in Ireland and did not come to the United States until he was fourteen years old. When that story failed to take root Hinman came forth with a new story that Arthur was born in Canada. This claim also fell on deaf ears.[5]

...
[o]n July 2, 1881, President Garfield was shot in the back by Charles J. Guiteau, who shouted: "I am a Stalwart of the Stalwarts... Arthur is president now!"[9] Arthur's shock at the assassination was augmented by his mortification at Guiteau's claim of political kinship. (Madmen and Geniuses, Barzman, 1974) Garfield initially survived the shooting, but due to a combination of infections and the poor medical care of the time, he gradually deteriorated and died on September 19.
...

The Arthur Administration enacted the first general Federal immigration law. Arthur approved a measure in 1882 excluding paupers, criminals, and the mentally ill. Congress also suspended Chinese immigration for ten years with the Chinese Exclusion Act, later making the restriction permanent.

Robot Nation

This image is very puzzling:

I thought the reason there were so many foreign workers in Singapore was because they were cheaper than robots. But perhaps this graph focusses on manufacturing rather than construction, and manufacturing jobs aren't as open to foreigners as construction ones are?

By the way, don't think of our foreign construction workers as unskilled. I was talking to some of them from Bangladesh and they've attended polytechnics in Dhaka and have to go for courses on how to paint buildings over here. My ancestors were coolies; these guys are smarter than them.

Closer to home: our last kampung

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/04/world/asia/04village.html?_r=2&hp

Actually, I doubt it's the last. There's all these strange little pockets in Singapore - can anyone corroborate?

Incidentally, my little brother's left to do a week at Grameen Bank in Dhaka, Bangladesh. My immediate family will not be reunited in Singapore again for at least 2 1/2 years.

But of course, we haven't had a Chinese New Year together since 1996, so I imagine we'll survive. (Wait, I tell a lie. There was one year in 2006 we were all together, but that's been it.)

Dorothy Porter is dead.

Shu Hoong, Deepika and I got the news from the staff at Darwin's WordStorm Festival this morning. We'd met her there, had a great time with her, had no clue she was battling cancer.

She was a poet who wrote best-selling crime novels in verse (including The Monkey's Mask), and a very out lesbian. I'd just asked NAC to invite her over for the Writers' Festival next year. I figured I'd interview her then for Fridae.com.

I only knew her for three days, but she sure as hell made an impression. We liked each other's work, you know. She gave me a copy of "Akhenaten" and I gave her a copy of "last boy".

She was cool. Very cool.

No-one teaches us how to mourn for friends like that. Ones you barely know, but feel an automatic kinship with. You feel false for feeling something, then feel cold for not feeling enough.

Good news!

1. A number of news sources are calling the American elections for Obama. I'm at an American friend's house watching CNN; they've projected an Obama win in Ohio and Virginia. (These are based on exit polls, so the Bradley effect isn't taken into account...)

OMG! CNN just called it for Obama (also based on projection)! And they're being extra-cautious after Kerry and Gore...

UPDATE: McCain's already giving his concession speech! And he's being incredibly classy... I now understand why Andrew Sullivan thought he could end bipartisanship. The crowd's booing a bit.

UPDATE TO UPDATE: Obama's talking. Oh, I know it's formulaic, his oratory style, but I'm still tearing up. Everyone in the room is crying, *everyone*. (I'm in an American dyke couple's house with their friends, y'see.)

2. Isrizal from the kangaroo T-shirt case tells me his side has managed to strike out the affidavits from the AG. The prosecution will have to bear the cost and the hearing is adjourned till 24 November.

3. My mum just got to meet Prince Andrew in Chengdu.

Three Things.

1. My friends (do I know them well enough for them to be my friends?) John Tan Liang Joo, Isrizal bin Mohamed and Shafi’ie are being tried for contempt of court for wearing kangaroo T-shirts to protest one of LKY's defamation trials as "a kangaroo court". It'll be at the High Court 6B from Tuesday to Thursday, 10 am.

Go and support them. Not sure if I can today, given that I'm a bit sick, but I'll definitely be there one of the days.

2. The U.S. elections are today. Jesus fuckin' Christ. John's of the opinion that both Obama and McCain are equally bad in terms of foreign policy, but I honestly think the US (and any concept of world human rights) will go down the toilet permanently if McCain wins. And you know what? I kinda like America. New York City, at least. Which counts.

(See Gawker for larger image of the above. UPDATE: Obama says his grandmother passed away on Monday.)

3. I'm rather distracted by artist David Kawena's illustrations of Disney heroes as underwear models. Below photo from Hollywire, artist's Deviantart page here, better access here.

(There, I blogged about things according to priority. Happy? Sigh.)

I know I'm kind of late with this, but...

... couldn't Time Out Singapore have had one professional theatremaker on their list of 40 Heroes instead of just Geetha Creffield?

(I asked her once, before the launch of "last boy", if she could organise a dramatised performance of the poems like she did for Aaron Maniam's book. She didn't get back to me, for understandable reasons - my poems are a little bit too sexy for mission schools.)

Buy Postage Block African witchcraft curses against McCain and Palin NOW!
Jim Bramlett
Sep 28 2008 04:12PM

Dear friends:

THIS IS EXTREMELY SERIOUS.

Minutes ago I spoke with friend Dr. Norman G. Marvin, M.D. and he is so concerned at what he has learned about Barack Obama's family in Kenya that he is calling a special prayer meeting in his home to pray against the witchcraft curses attempted by them against John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Dr. Marvin sent me the below e-mail from Flo Ellers. Flo is credentialed with the International Fellowship of Ministries which is based in Washington State. She is also a member of EndTime Handmaidens and Servants of Jasper, Arkansas.

IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO SPIRITUAL WARFARE, PLEASE PRAY TODAY AND CONTINUALLY THAT ALL SUCH CURSES BE BROKEN AND SATAN'S PLAN FOR AMERICA BE DEFEATED, IN JESUS' NAME. PRAY AND COVER MCCAIN AND PALIN WITH THE BLOOD OF CHRIST. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO SPIRITUAL WARFARE, IT IS TIME YOU LEARN!!!

Jim
______________________________________

From Flo Ellers. Excerpt. (Emphasis supplied in bold and underlines.)

Two days ago, I listened to a 9-6-08 message by Bree Keyton, a young woman evangelist who had just traveled to Kenya and visited Obama's home village and what she found out about his relations with his tribal people was chilling. And his "cousin" Odinga was dreadful. She said the witches, warlocks and those involved in satanism and the occult get up daily at 3 a.m. to release curses against McCain and Palin so B. Hussein Obama is elected.

Bree Keyton told the tribal "Christians" you are NOT Christian if you practice "tribalism" where they do voodoo to conjure up a goddess spirit or a "genie" and then come to church on Sunday to worship Jesus! What she discovered there is apparent in most churches around the world; namely, mixture in the church. Some renounced their devilish practices of blood covenant by killing sheep, goats, humans to be inducted into the tribe or to get a wife or to get revenge.

She said the current president of Kenya is a Christian. However, Obama's cousin Odinga ran aganist him and said he rigged the election and stirred up the masses to rape woman and boys, kill and burn and torture Christians, etc. until Obama contacted Condeleeza Rice and she granted Obama the right to contact Odinga and other ruling elders and he "convinced" them to stop terrorizing the Christians. Bree Keyton said the current Christian President was forced by our government (!) to "create" an office for Odinga (to make "peace") so he was made the Prime Minister (!) to make peace between the Christians and Odinga's Muslim religion!

Bree Keyton went and visited Obama's tribal people and she found out Obama is 75% Arab and his family are Muslims. Odinga is strill trying to become the President of Kenya. If he does, he will make a law forbidding all public preaching and institute Sharia Law. Bree K. said Odinga has made a pact with satan.

Bree K. also said when Obama visited his tribe in '06 and as late as Jan. '08 he went to every elder's home which has a "shrine" inside to worship the genie and asked for their blessing. She was told Obama and Odinga were both "destined" before they were born to be president/leader of their nation. They say "he is the chosen one". She said Obama's grandmother sacrificed a black and a white chicken to the "goddess of the river" so both whites and blacks will vote for Obama. All Islam loves and worships Obama. The world is mesmerized by him. Oprah's 200 million followers are out to elect Obama. Also, Dick Morris of Fox News was sent to Kenya to help Odinga run his campaign! I find that unbelievable.

The occultists are "weaving lazy 8's around McCain's mind to make him look confused and like an idiot". Bree K. said we need to break these curses off of him that are being sent from Kenya.

I read a portion of "Obama Nation" book and looked at several websites and found most of this information to be true, all except the curses part, of course....

End of excerpt.

And now it's final. Ka-ching ka-ching, mofo. (I can call him that because he technically does fo my mo.)

And for an extra coupla moments of Zen:

Shocker!!! Fags in the Singapore Army!!!

My friend's going into the army later this month. Direct intake. Combat-fit. And he's gay.

According to him, the Medical Officer DID NOT ASK HIM IF HE WAS HOMOSEXUAL during the pre-enlistment medical check-up. They didn't get him to pull down his underpants and cough, either.

This was part of the old ritual, part of my and many other men's coming out experiences, for chrissakes. When I confessed I was gay, they made me wait in the clinic with all the other boys in their underwear and monitored me for signs of arousal (I was too full of angst to get a hard-on).

Now they don't even have a waiting-room full of boys in underwear. Guys are allowed to wear shorts. (Exposing the skin isn't just so doctors can check vital stats more easily, it's also to reveal gangster tattoos.)

My friend got checked up by the army first in 2005 (they asked him the gay question, and he denied everything), and is now being treated to a different standard operating procedure in 2008. So in between, something must have changed.

So are they okay with gay, lesbian and bisexual officers now then? Does the category 302 even exist anymore? Or is it reserved for pre-op transsexuals? (There was one in my camp, and she was gorgeous.)

And - for the sake of my categorising mind - when the hell did this change get made?

Very very clever of the government men, to do it so quietly, so the fundies wouldn't get pissed off. Still shocked. Still shocked.
